adding fraction

In this blog we are going to discuss about adding fraction. Also to know about proper fraction see the link given proper fraction.

A fraction is a part of a whole. fraction could be altered to a decimal by dividing the upper number, or numerator, by the lower number, or denominator. Fractions are to indicate ratios, & to represent division which is one of the basic arithmetic operations. The fraction 3/4 is also used to identify the ratio 3:4 (three to four) & the division 3 ÷ 4 as well.(three divided by four).
Steps for Adding Fractions

Rules for adding fractions - Same denominators  add the numerators. Keep the same denominator.
     1         2       1 + 2        3
   ----- + ----- = --------- = -----
     8         8           8           8

Fraction rule of addition with different denominators, Then take L.C.D of those three numbers as the denominator & multiply the numerator with an appropriate number to give the L.C.D value. & then add
      1        1         2         1         3
    ----- + ----- = ----- + ----- = ------
      2        4         4         4         4

If the denominators don't divide equally, Then take L.C.D of those three numbers as the denominator & multiply the numerator with an appropriate number to give the L.C.D value. & then add

Note: Since 3 doesn't go in to 5, use 3 x 5 = 15.
     1         3        5        9        14
   ----- + ----- = ----- + ----- = -----
     3        5         15     15      15
when adding these fractions they get   [14/15] .
Next time we will see more example on adding fraction.
